Legality of apartment lease?

suppose you signed a lease and a friend verbally agrees to move in and help you with 1/2 payments... three months into it he decides to move in with his girlfriend but says he will still pay his half of the rent until the lease is up... long story short he never pays up... can you win in a legal battle to get the owed money?
